The Dutchess & The Duke's music is that self-examining 3am conversation you had with your best friend after one too many glasses of wine. You know, the one where you dished all your fears and second guesses about your choices in life, confessed your deepest desires, and made a pact to strive for something more meaningful. And it's beautiful, because those rambling reflective conversations birth change and self discovery. Those humbling realizations keep us hungry and hopeful. The Dutchess & The Duke's sophomore album Sunrise/Sunset is dead on with it's innate ability to show you the…

  • Welcome to Atlanta: SXSW Interactive Makes Its First Visit

    andrew
    9 Feb 2010 | 10:53 am
We made our first SXSW trip to Atlanta on Monday night, and we weren't disappointed. SXSW Interactive held its latest networking party at the Cypress Street Pint and Plate in Midtown Atlanta, Georgia. The local beer was delicious and the ideas were aplenty as there were no evident signs of Super Bowl hangover present. We'd like to thank everyone at the Pint and Plate, including the owners Bill and Jenn, and the rest of the staff including Michelle, Meghan, Gordon and Bret. Of course, we couldn't have done it without help from our public relations partner, Porter Novelli and their local…

  • NYC Media Establishment Takes on Twitter

    hugh
    9 Feb 2010 | 7:57 am
Check out the contentious back-and-forth about the value of Twitter between two of the nation's most prominent media elites. The opening volley was fired by George Packer in his "Stop the World" column in the January 29 edition of The New Yorker. "Every time I hear about Twitter I want to yell Stop," Packer wrote. "The notion of sending and getting brief updates to and from dozens or thousands of people every few minutes is an image from information hell." Responding to this throw-down, Nick Bilton of The New York Times launched a counter-attack on February 3: "Unfortunately, Mr. Packer’s…

Congrats to the World Champion New Orleans Saints after their thrilling 31-17 Super Bowl win over the Indianapolis Colts. And, speaking of the Crescent City, be sure to check out the "Uprising Tide: Inciting Online Communities Into Offline Movements" panel, scheduled for Saturday, March 13, at 3:30 pm. This session will explore how some unlikely instigators from New Orleans put their tech community on the map with little more than passion, a bus, T-shirts, and some duct tape. This panel promises to teach you how to create an organic net-roots movement that upends traditional power structures…

  • What I'm Listening to Now: Fanfarlo "Reservoir"

    evelynanne
    2 Feb 2010 | 3:28 pm
I first heard Fanfarlo last spring in a wrap up of last year’s South x Southwest showcase.  The recording of their live show was a little rough, so it was hard to get the real sense of what Fanfarlo sounded like.  Months later, after numerous reccomendations, I finally picked up their first full release, Reservoir. Remember the band Clap Your Hands Say Yeah?  They released one of my favorite LPs of the decade with their self-titled debut.  Then, two years later, came Some Loud Thunder, an album that had its moments was but overall very disappointing.  Where am I going with this? …

This year, visitors to ACL 2009 can also take advantage of First Thursdays on South Congress Ave. First Thursdays are a fun (Austin) way to enjoy all the businesses located on South Congress Ave. If you are coming to Austin for ACL 2009, please be safe and have fun. On another, but related subject – It has been a while since I last posted to this space, and I don’t think I’ll have time to post anything meaningful before ACL 2009. However, please feel free to search the site for places to…
  • ..."School Of Rock" for bands who want to go to SXSW? Nah!

    28 Aug 2009 | 4:05 am
According to a Liverpool Daily Post article yesterday, Parr Street studios in Liverpool will host next month a “school of rock” event to help Merseyside musicians to go to South By Southwest (SXSW) festival next year. I say…silly, billy. Dirtblonde went to SXSW 2009 without any help from Liverpool Sound City, UKTI North West etc. Not that we didn’t try to get help from them…we sure did, but in the end we were probably deemed not good enough for them, or whatever was their reason. But did it stop us? No it bloody didn’t. If you believe in your music, you…

The Ugly Beats are an Austin band that I first featured in a 5 Questions for interview at the beginning of the month.  We had some technical difficulties with the song featured in that post, so I’m re-presenting it below this post.  That means that you get a double doze of  ”ugly” with two songs and a music video to boot.  With their 1960s flavor I just have to say, “Right On.” June 19, 2009 Name:   The Ugly Beats Genre:   Rock and Roll Music Latest Release:  Take a Stand with The Ugly Beats (GET HIP Records) Release Date:   2006 This, That, or…
